How California rates El Segundo schools
California has no letter grades for schools. The California School Dashboard gives each school a color on each indicator, from Red (lowest) through Orange, Yellow and Green to Blue (highest), combining this year's result with the change from last year. Test results are reported as distance from standard: the average number of points students scored above (+) or below (-) the grade-level standard on state tests in grades 3 to 8 and 11. Chronic absenteeism is the share of K-8 students who missed at least 10% of school days, so lower is better.
Every figure below comes from the California Department of Education's 2025 Dashboard data files (the fall 2025 release, covering 2024-25), for all students. The 2026 Dashboard normally comes out in December, so check the live site for newer results.

El Segundo public schools, one by one
Center Street Elementary School
Center Street Elementary, at 700 Center Street, is one of the district's two neighborhood elementary schools, serving transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. Its English score of +54.4 was 1.7 points lower than the year before, and its math score fell 8.2 points to +46.6, which moved math to Green. Chronic absenteeism rose to 7.4%, rated Orange. The Dashboard counted 812 students in its absenteeism figures. Ask the principal what the school is doing about the math dip and attendance.
Richmond Street Elementary School
Richmond Street Elementary, at 615 Richmond Street near downtown, is the second elementary school and also serves TK through fifth grade. It scored +59.1 in English, up 2.7 points, and +54.4 in math, nearly unchanged, both Blue. Chronic absenteeism was 7.8% (Orange), similar to Center Street. It is the smaller of the two, with 605 students counted in its absenteeism figures. The district held TK and kindergarten walk-throughs at both schools in March 2026, which is a good chance to compare them.
El Segundo Middle School
El Segundo Middle School, at 332 Center Street, takes every sixth to eighth grader in the district. It made the largest gains of any school in the city on the 2025 Dashboard: English rose 11.2 points to +67.3 and math rose 12.0 points to +58.6, both Blue. Chronic absenteeism fell from 7.2% to 3.7%, also Blue. With 816 students in the absenteeism count, it is the district's largest school below high school.
El Segundo High School
El Segundo High School, at 640 Main Street, is the district's comprehensive high school. Its eleventh graders scored +85.0 in English, the highest result in the district, and +36.8 in math, up 9.3 points. The four-year graduation rate was 97.4%, with 341 of 350 students graduating, down from 100% the year before but still Blue. Ask the school for its current list of advanced and career courses, since course offerings change each year.
Arena High School, the district's alternative program
Arena High (Continuation) is listed in the state directory at 630 Arena Street; the district now calls it Arena Virtual High School and gives the district office at 641 Sheldon Street as its contact. It serves a small number of students: 17 were in its 2025 graduation cohort, all of whom graduated. Groups this small do not receive Dashboard colors.
Eagles' Nest Preschool
The district also runs Eagles' Nest Preschool, listed among its schools on the district website. Ask the district office for current fees and waitlist times; we did not find them published.
School choice, transfers and charter schools in El Segundo
Elementary placement in El Segundo Unified
El Segundo Unified says it does its best to place elementary students at their nearest neighborhood school, Center Street or Richmond Street, but makes no guarantees. Placement depends on space in each grade when you register, and if the class at your neighborhood school is full, your child goes to the school with room. During the district's School Choice open enrollment, families can ask for a transfer between the two.
Interdistrict permits into El Segundo Unified
Families who live outside the city can apply for an interdistrict permit in the district's yearly application window. Approval depends on space, with places filled by random lottery, and a student admitted on a permit stays only while meeting the district's grade, attendance and behavior rules. The district's enrollment page lists the current window.
Da Vinci charter high schools on Douglas Street
Three charter high schools authorized by Wiseburn Unified share an address at 201 North Douglas Street, in El Segundo's business district: Da Vinci Science, Da Vinci Design and Da Vinci Communications, each serving grades 9 to 12. Their 2025 results differ widely. Da Vinci Science scored +67.3 in English and graduated 97.0% of its class; Da Vinci Design scored -7.1 in English and -97.0 in math. Admission rules are set by each charter, so read them directly.
How to check schools for an El Segundo address
We never say a home is zoned for a particular school, and in El Segundo the district itself does not promise elementary placement by address. Use these steps instead.
- Confirm the address is inside El Segundo Unified on the district's boundary map, linked from its home page.
- Call the district office at (310) 615-2650 or email enrollment@esusd.net and ask which elementary school currently has space in your child's grade.
- Look up each school on the California School Dashboard for the latest results by student group.
- Gather proof of residency early. Homeowners upload the grant deed, the latest property tax bill (or the final escrow settlement statement if you just closed) and one current gas, electric, cable or water bill. Renters upload the full signed lease naming the children, proof of rent paid and one utility bill.
Transitional kindergarten is open to children who turn four by September 1, and kindergarten to those who turn five by that date. For prices around each school, see our El Segundo homes guide or the El Segundo cost of living page.
Measure ES: the school bond on El Segundo tax bills
What Measure ES pays for in El Segundo schools
El Segundo voters approved Measure ES, a $92 million school bond, with 63.32% of the vote. The ballot text describes upgrades to classrooms, science labs, libraries, career training spaces and technology, plus repairs to roofs, plumbing and electrical systems, funded by a levy estimated at 4.3 cents per $100 of assessed value, about $5.5 million a year while the bonds are outstanding. A citizens' oversight committee reports on spending.
The school bond line on an El Segundo tax bill
The El Segundo Unified bond line, where Measure ES is levied, rose from 0.080364% in 2025-26 to 0.11374% in 2026-27 in the Auditor-Controller's rate for tax rate area 3708. On a home assessed at $1,500,000, that line alone is about $1,706 a year. Our Los Angeles County property tax guide explains how bond lines work.
