Windsor schools on the California School Dashboard (2025)

The California School Dashboard is the state's school report card. It shows how far a school's average English and math scores sit above or below the "met standard" line, in points, and gives each result one of five colors from Red (lowest) through Orange, Yellow and Green to Blue (highest). The color weighs both this year's level and the change from last year. The 2025 Dashboard uses tests from spring 2025.

Source: California Department of Education, 2025 Dashboard data files, all students. Grades are from the district's Our Schools page. Chronic absenteeism is the share of K-8 students who missed at least 10% of school days, so the Dashboard does not report it for high schools.

Two things stand out. Windsor High scores above the state in English and graduates students at a rate about eight points above the state's 87.8%. Below high school, every school in the table scores below the state average in English, and every one except Cali Calmecac has chronic absenteeism above the state's 17.1%. Math improved at Windsor Middle (up 13.4 points) and Windsor High (up 10.0 points) from the year before.

How Windsor's elementary schools are organized

Windsor Unified does not assign elementary students by neighborhood. The district describes its elementary schools as clustered by grade: every child in the main pathway attends Mattie Washburn for the early grades and Brooks for grades 3 to 5. The other pathway is the bilingual charter, Cali Calmecac.

Mattie Washburn Elementary (preschool to grade 2)

Mattie Washburn is at 75 Pleasant Avenue, with a Santa Rosa 95403 mailing address. The district now lists it as preschool through 2nd grade, and the Margie Mejia Preschool feeds into it. The 2025 Dashboard still counted 157 tested students for the school, scoring 65.8 points below standard in English and 60.8 below in math. Students are first tested in grade 3, so ask the district how the school's grades changed between 2025 and now. Chronic absenteeism was 24.3%.

Brooks Elementary (grades 3 to 5)

Brooks, at 750 Natalie Drive, opened in 1988 and takes all of the district's grade 3 to 5 students in the main pathway. On the 2025 Dashboard, its 473 tested students scored 48.6 points below standard in English and 67.2 below in math, both rated Orange, with English down 7.9 points and math down 11.8 points from the year before. Chronic absenteeism improved by 3.4 points to 19.8%.

Cali Calmecac Language Academy (charter, preschool to grade 8)

Cali Calmecac, at 9491 Starr Road, is a Spanish-English dual immersion charter school run under the district. The district's history page says the program began in 1986 and became a charter in 1998. Admission is not guaranteed: there is an application process, and the district says the school generally does not accept new students after 2nd grade. On the 2025 Dashboard it scored 40.9 points below standard in English and 57.2 below in math, and its chronic absenteeism, 14.1%, was the lowest of the K-8 schools in the table above.

Windsor Middle, Windsor High and the other secondary options

Windsor Middle School (grades 6 to 8)

Windsor Middle is at 9500 Brooks Road. The district describes culinary and science classrooms, a school garden and a wide set of electives. Its 700 tested students scored 23.5 points below standard in English, rated Orange, and 51.0 below in math, rated Yellow after a 13.4-point gain. Chronic absenteeism rose 11.8 points to 22.3%, rated Red, which is the result to ask the principal about.

Windsor High School (grades 9 to 12)

Windsor High, at 8695 Windsor Road, was scheduled to open its permanent campus in July 2000, after Windsor voters approved a K-12 district in 1992; before that, Windsor teenagers went to high school in Healdsburg. The district describes a core system of small learning communities in the upper grades, career technical education academies and honors tracks. In 2025 it graduated 95.7% of 417 students, rated Blue, and scored 18.0 points above standard in English. Math, at 74.2 points below standard, is the weak spot despite a 10-point gain.

Sonoma County Virtual Academy (online, grades 6 to 12)

The district runs a fully online school for grades 6 to 12, which shares Windsor High's address and principal. Students can take part in Windsor Unified sports, clubs and dances. The Dashboard counted 26 tested students and 22 graduates, too few for colors; 72.7% of that cohort graduated.

Big Picture Learning Windsor and Windsor Oaks Academy

The district lists a Big Picture Learning high school, an internship-based model; only 10 students were tested in 2025, too few for results. Windsor Oaks Academy appears in the 2025 Dashboard files with 31 students in its graduation count and an 80.6% rate, but it is not on the district's current Our Schools page, so ask the district whether it still operates.

Neighboring school districts around Windsor

Some addresses with a Windsor or nearby mailing address fall in a different district. These are the closest, with their 2025 Dashboard English results.

Healdsburg Unified

Healdsburg Unified scored 10.5 points above standard in English, rated Green, on the 2025 Dashboard. See our Healdsburg schools guide for its schools one by one.

Mark West Union Elementary

Mark West Union is a neighboring elementary district with four schools in the Dashboard files. Its district result was 9.3 points below standard in English, but schools differ widely: San Miguel Elementary scored 27.1 points above standard, rated Blue, and John B. Riebli Elementary 2.1 above, rated Green. An elementary district does not run a high school, so ask which high school district also serves the address.

West Side Union Elementary

West Side Union, a one-school elementary district, scored 73.2 points above standard in English, rated Blue, with 66 students tested. Small districts can swing a lot from year to year.

Village Charter

The Dashboard files list Village Charter under Windsor Unified as a charter school. Its 70 tested students scored 0.8 points above standard in English and 37.7 below in math, and chronic absenteeism was 4.2%. Ask the school about its location, grades and admission rules.

School choice and transfers in Windsor Unified

Windsor Unified takes students from outside its boundaries through interdistrict transfers. For 2027-28, the district will accept applications from January 13, 2027 through April 30, 2027. You first get the Sonoma County Interdistrict Transfer Agreement approved by your home district, then apply to Windsor. The district lists open houses for 2027-28: Windsor Middle on January 27, 2027, Mattie Washburn on May 13, 2027 and Brooks on May 20, 2027, with Windsor High tours in December 2026.

Cali Calmecac has its own application, and Sonoma County Virtual Academy enrolls through an interest form. Because elementary placement goes by grade, not address, the transfer and charter rules matter more in Windsor than the street you buy on.

How to check which district serves a Windsor address

Step 1: use the Sonoma County district lookup

Windsor Unified's enrollment page sends families to the Sonoma County district and elected official lookup. Enter the full address and read the school district line. Do this for any home near the town's edges, toward Healdsburg, Fulton or north Santa Rosa, and for homes on rural roads.

Step 2: confirm with Windsor Unified

Call the district office at 9291 Old Redwood Highway, Building 500, on 707-837-7701, with the address and your child's grade. Never rely on a listing's school line or on a ZIP code: a mailing address does not decide the district, and Mattie Washburn itself has a Santa Rosa address.

Step 3: read each school's Dashboard page

Look the school up on caschooldashboard.org and open the student group results, the trend over two years and the suspension and college and career indicators. A school's color can move a step in one year, so read the numbers behind it. The School Accountability Report Cards on the district site add more detail on each school.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Windsor Schools,
answered.

What school district is Windsor, CA in?+

Most of Windsor is served by Windsor Unified School District, which runs schools from preschool through grade 12, including Windsor High, Windsor Middle, Brooks and Mattie Washburn elementary schools and the Cali Calmecac charter. Some addresses near the edges of town may fall in a neighboring district, so check every address on the Sonoma County district lookup.

Is Windsor Unified a good school district?+

Results are mixed on the 2025 California School Dashboard. Windsor High graduated 95.7% of students, rated Blue, and scored above the state standard in English. Does my Windsor address decide which elementary school my child attends?+

In the main pathway, no. Windsor Unified groups its elementary schools by grade, so children attend Mattie Washburn for the early grades and Brooks for grades 3 to 5, wherever they live in the district. The bilingual charter, Cali Calmecac, takes students by application. Your address still decides whether you are in Windsor Unified at all.

Can my child transfer into Windsor Unified from another district?+

Yes, through an interdistrict transfer. For the 2027-28 school year, Windsor Unified accepts applications from January 13 to April 30, 2027.
