How to read California School Dashboard results
California does not give schools letter grades. The California School Dashboard, run by the California Department of Education (CDE), rates each school on several measures and gives each one of five colors. From lowest to highest they are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue. A color blends this year's result with the change from last year, so a school can earn Green with a modest score that improved a lot.
- English and math are reported as distance from standard: how many points, on average, students scored above (+) or below (-) the grade-level standard on state tests in grades 3 to 8 and 11.
- Graduation rate is the four-year cohort rate for high schools.
- Chronic absenteeism is the share of K-8 students who missed 10% or more of the school year. Lower is better.
Every figure on this page comes from the CDE's 2025 Dashboard data files for all students, which were the latest available in October 2026. Addresses come from the CDE public schools directory.

School choice in Chino: transfers, fundamental schools and charters
Chino Valley Unified open enrollment
The district runs an intradistrict open enrollment window each fall. For the 2027-28 school year, applications run from November 2 to December 4, 2026. Applications go into a random lottery in January, and families on the waiting list may receive offers through September 30. Approved transfers last only to the top grade of the school, so families reapply for each span: K-6, 7-8 and 9-12. Parents provide transportation. Cal Aero Preserve Academy, Legacy Academy and Rhodes Elementary are closed to transfers except for qualifying siblings and children of employees who work there.
Fundamental schools and academies
Two Chino schools carry the word Fundamental in their official names: Lyle S. Briggs Fundamental and Anna A. Borba Fundamental Elementary. Ask the district what the fundamental program involves at each and whether it has space this year. At the high school level, the Biomedical Science & Technology Academy at Chino High and dual enrollment with Chaffey College are listed on the district's site. Ask the district office which programs have space before you plan around one.
Allegiance STEAM Academy - Thrive (charter)
Allegiance STEAM Academy - Thrive, at 5862 C Street in 91710, is a K-8 charter school listed under Chino Valley Unified in the CDE directory. It scored 11.3 above standard in English (Green) and 19.7 below in math (Yellow), with 12.6% chronic absenteeism. Charters admit by application, not by address.
How to check which schools serve a Chino address
We never state that a home is zoned for a school. Attendance areas follow district lines, not ZIP codes, and they change as The Preserve fills in. Before you buy:
- Use the school site locator and address lookup on the Chino Valley Unified website (under Parents, Enrollment).
- Confirm by phone with the district's Student Support Services at (909) 628-1201, extension 1745, or in person at 13461 Ramona Avenue, Monday to Friday.
- For a Preserve home, ask whether the address is assigned to Cal Aero or Legacy, since both are full and closed to transfers.
- Look the school up on the California School Dashboard and check the latest year, not a listing's summary.
