Danville crime by year: the California DOJ counts

Every law enforcement agency in California reports its annual crime counts to the state Department of Justice, which publishes them in the Crimes and Clearances file on OpenJustice. The row for Danville covers the Town of Danville, served by the Danville Police Department at 500 La Gonda Way. Here is every year from 2015 to 2025.

YearViolent crimesProperty crimes

20169365
201716353
201816326
201923296
202021239
202118251
202214290
202334303
202427250
202524185

Reported property crime in Danville fell by more than half over the period, down 62.2% from 490 in 2015 to 185 in 2025, the lowest year in the table. Against 2019, the last year before the pandemic, 2025 was 37.5% lower. Violent crime counts are mostly in the teens and twenties, so a few incidents move them a long way: 9 in 2016, a high of 34 in 2023, then 27 in 2024 and 24 in 2025.

Danville's 2025 violent crimes by type

The 24 violent crimes reported in 2025 were 21 aggravated assaults, 2 robberies and 1 rape. No homicides were reported in 2025. In 2024 there were no homicides, 7 rapes, 6 robberies and 14 aggravated assaults.

Danville's 2025 property crimes by type

Larceny-theft made up 147 of the 185 property crimes (79%). There were 24 burglaries, 13 of them at homes and 11 at other buildings, and 14 motor vehicle thefts. Inside the larceny count, the largest groups were shoplifting (43), other thefts (37), thefts from vehicles (28), bicycle thefts (16), thefts of vehicle parts and accessories (9) and thefts from buildings (8). The same file lists 2 arsons in 2025, 1 of them involving a structure.

The biggest change: thefts from cars and home burglaries

Most of Danville's ten-year fall came from two categories. Thefts from motor vehicles dropped from 201 in 2015 to 28 in 2025, an 86% fall. Residential burglaries dropped from 68 to 13. Shoplifting moved the other way, from 19 reports in 2015 to 43 in 2025, and vehicle thefts peaked at 45 in 2023 before falling back to 19 in 2024 and 14 in 2025.

Danville cases cleared in 2025

A case is cleared when it is closed by an arrest or by exceptional means, such as the death of the suspect. In 2025 the file shows 12 of 24 violent crimes cleared (50%) and 18 of 185 property crimes cleared (10%). In a town this size, clearance rates swing from year to year: in 2018, 57 property crimes were cleared out of 326.

Danville crime rates compared with San Ramon, Walnut Creek and California

Counts do not compare towns of different sizes, so we turn them into rates: each agency's 2025 count divided by its Census population (American Community Survey 2020-2024) and multiplied by 1,000. San Ramon and Walnut Creek are the two nearby cities most buyers compare with Danville.

Area, 2025PopulationViolent crimesViolent per 1,000Property crimesProperty per 1,000
Danville (town)43,401240.61854.3
San Ramon (city)85,993790.98259.6
Walnut Creek (city)70,0881482.11,70224.3
California39,287,377170,3974.3705,92518.0

On these figures, Danville's reported violent crime rate was about one eighth of California's and its property crime rate just under a quarter of the state's. It was also below San Ramon on both measures. Keep in mind that rates divide by residents only, while shoppers, commuters and visitors also generate reports, so a city with large retail areas shows a higher property rate per resident.

What the Danville figures cover, and what they miss

  • Town limits only. The Danville row counts crimes reported to the Danville Police Department. Places that share a Danville mailing address but sit outside the town, such as the Blackhawk and Camino Tassajara Census areas in ZIP 94506, are not in it. Ask which agency patrols a specific address before you rely on the town figures.
  • The county row is not split. The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department row in the same file is one total for everything that agency reports (428 violent and 1,567 property crimes in 2025). It cannot be broken down to Blackhawk, Diablo or Alamo.
  • Reported crime only. The file counts incidents reported to police, using the FBI's summary categories. Unreported thefts, fraud, identity theft and most online crime are not included.
  • No street detail. OpenJustice publishes town-wide totals. It does not rank Danville neighborhoods, and neither do we.

For the statewide picture, our guide to the safest places to live in California applies the same DOJ data across many cities.

How to check crime near a Danville address

The town-wide trend is the starting point. For a particular street, use the tools the Danville Police Department and the state publish.

The Danville Police weekly blotter

The department posts a weekly blotter (PDF) on its Police page. Each entry lists the call number, time, a location given as a block or an intersection, such as Camino Tassajara at Lawrence Road or the 400 block of Hartz Avenue, a short description and a disposition code. The department's "Decoding the Danville Police Weekly Blotter" sheet explains the codes: ARR is an arrest, CIT a citation, RTF a report to follow, UNF unfounded. Many entries are traffic stops, false alarms and service calls, so read several weeks before drawing conclusions about a street.

The Community Crime Map linked by the town

The Police page also links the Community Crime Map, which plots recent reported incidents on a map. Search the address, widen the date range to several months and compare it with a few other streets you are considering.

Police reports and records requests

Under the department's FAQ, police reports are obtained through the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Records Unit, and traffic collision reports through the department's online portal. For anything else about a block, call the department's front desk at 925-314-3700 during lobby hours.

Megan's Law and the FBI Crime Data Explorer

The California DOJ Megan's Law website maps registered sex offenders by address. The FBI Crime Data Explorer shows the same agency's figures as reported to the FBI, useful for checking a trend against a second source.

Danville Police programs open to homeowners

The department lists 30 officers, 12 civilian support staff, 4 reserve officers and 30 Volunteers in Policing serving about 43,000 residents. Three of its programs matter to a buyer or new owner:

  • Free home security inspections. The department offers free Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) inspections of a home or business; book one at 925-314-3700.
  • Vacation house checks. Residents can request checks on an empty home through a form on the town website.
  • Alerts. The town's Stay Connected page lists the alert sign-ups, and the department posts on Nextdoor, Facebook and Instagram.

The department's crime prevention tips cover auto burglary and security cameras, the two topics most tied to the theft categories in the state data.

Fire, flood and earthquake checks for a Danville home

For most buyers the bigger costs come from hazards rather than crime, because they set insurance premiums. Hazard maps vary from one parcel to the next, so check each address.

Wildfire hazard zone for a Danville parcel

Look up the address on Cal OES MyHazards and on CAL FIRE's fire hazard severity zone map, and read the Natural Hazard Disclosure in the seller's packet. Our California wildfire zones guide explains the zones, and the California FAIR Plan guide covers what happens if standard insurers decline the home.

Flood and earthquake checks in Danville

Search the parcel on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, especially for lots near creeks. Like the rest of the Bay Area, Danville carries earthquake risk, which a standard home policy excludes; see our California earthquake insurance guide.

Before you buy or rent in Danville: a short checklist

  1. Read Danville's OpenJustice trend over at least five years, not one.
  2. Confirm whether the address is inside town limits or in an unincorporated area served by another agency.
  3. Read four to six weekly blotters and search the Community Crime Map around the street.
  4. Search the Megan's Law website.
  5. Check fire, flood and earthquake hazards and get insurance quotes before you remove contingencies.
  6. Visit on a weekday evening and on a weekend.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Danville Crime Rate,
answered.

What is the crime rate in Danville, CA?+

In 2025 the Danville Police Department reported 24 violent crimes and 185 property crimes to the California Department of Justice. With a Census population of 43,401, that is about 0.6 violent and 4.3 property crimes per 1,000 residents. California's rates were 4.3 and 18.0 per 1,000. The figures count reported crimes inside town limits only.

Is Danville, CA safe?+

We do not label places safe or unsafe. The official data show Danville's reported crime rates in 2025 were well below the state's: about one eighth of California's violent rate and just under a quarter of its property rate. Reported property crime fell 62% between 2015 and 2025. Check the specific street with the town's blotter and crime map.

What are the safest neighborhoods in Danville?+

No official dataset ranks Danville neighborhoods, and we do not either. The state DOJ file reports one total for the town. To compare streets, read several of the police department's weekly blotters, which list calls by block or intersection, and search the Community Crime Map linked from the town's Police page over a few months.

Is crime in Danville going up or down?+

Property crime is down over ten years, from 490 reports in 2015 to 185 in 2025, with the largest falls in thefts from cars and home burglaries. Violent crime counts are small and uneven: 34 in 2023, 27 in 2024 and 24 in 2025. Shoplifting rose over the period, from 19 reports to 43.

Does Danville's crime data include Blackhawk?+

No. Blackhawk is a separate Census area outside the Town of Danville, even though it uses Danville's 94506 ZIP code. The DOJ's Danville figures cover crimes reported to the Danville Police Department inside town limits. Ask which agency serves an address before comparing it with the town figures, since the county's numbers are not split by community.

Where does the Danville crime data on this page come from?+

The yearly counts, crime types and clearances come from the California Department of Justice's Crimes and Clearances file on OpenJustice, 1985 to 2025, the latest year published. Rates use Census American Community Survey 2020-2024 populations. Address-level tools come from the Danville Police Department's own web pages.
