How the California School Dashboard scores Hermosa Beach schools

The California School Dashboard is the state's school report. For English language arts (ELA) and math, it shows how far a school's average test score sits above or below the grade-level standard on the state test, given to grades 3 to 8 and 11, in points. It also gives each measure one of five colors, from Red (lowest) to Blue (highest), based on both the current result and the change from the year before. Chronic absenteeism is the share of students who missed at least 10% of the school days they were enrolled.

The figures below come from the Department of Education's 2025 Dashboard data files, all students. Read them with the size of the school in mind. Hermosa Beach's district results rest on 864 tested students, so a few dozen students can move a school's score several points.

The district's ELA result rose 0.8 points from 2024 and its math result rose 3.2 points. Chronic absenteeism went up, from 6.5% to 7.4%, still well below the state's 17.1%. Manhattan Beach Unified scored higher on both tests; Redondo Beach Unified scored lower.

Hermosa Beach public schools, one per age band

The district describes itself as one school on three sites. Every student in a given grade attends the same campus, so the question for a buyer is the district, not the school. Vista was built and View rebuilt under Measure S, a $59 million bond that voters passed in June 2016 with 59% of the vote.

Hermosa Beach Preschool at Hermosa View

The district opened a preschool for three- and four-year-olds at Hermosa View in fall 2023. Ask the district office about places, fees and the application window, because space is limited.

Hermosa View School, 1800 Prospect Avenue (TK to grade 1)

Hermosa View first opened in 1949, closed for reconstruction in spring 2021 and reopened on September 6, 2022. Since fall 2023 it has served transitional kindergarten through first grade. Its students are too young for the state test, so the Dashboard reports test results for it through a pairing method that draws on the grades it feeds into: ELA 57.6 points above standard and math 69.6 above, both Blue. Its chronic absenteeism was 12.1%, the highest of the three campuses.

Hermosa Vista School, 417 25th Street (grades 2 to 4)

Vista was built on the site of the old North School and opened on April 12, 2021. It has served grades 2 to 4 since fall 2023. Vista posted the district's strongest 2025 results: ELA 70.9 points above standard, up 22.7, and math 76.6 above, up 21.4, both Blue, across 287 tested students. Chronic absenteeism was 0.2%, one student in 436.

Hermosa Valley School, 1645 Valley Drive (grades 5 to 8)

Valley opened in 1949, became a K-8 school in 1987 and has served grades 5 to 8 since fall 2022. It is the district's largest tested group, 577 students. ELA was 61.1 points above standard, down 10.0 from 2024, and math 41.5 above, down 5.9, both Green. Chronic absenteeism was 9.5%. The campus dates from 1949, and voters approved a further bond, Measure HV, in November 2024 to modernize its classrooms and science labs; check the district site for project timing.

High schools for Hermosa Beach students

Hermosa Beach has no public high school of its own. In November 1992, voters in the three Beach Cities passed Proposition V by 59.1%, which dissolved the South Bay Union High School District. Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach formed unified districts, Hermosa Beach stayed an elementary district, and state law (AB 325, Chapter 24 of 1992) lets students who live in the Hermosa district attend high school in either neighbor. The district says each grade 8 student chooses.

Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach

Mira Costa's ELA result was 90.9 points above standard, up 26.5, and its math result rose 38.1 points to 32.8 above, both Blue. Its 2025 graduation rate was 98.7%. Ask Manhattan Beach Unified how and when Hermosa students register, and what transportation exists.

Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach

Redondo Union's ELA result was 62.5 points above standard (Green) and its math result 5.1 points below (Yellow), both lower than in 2024. Its graduation rate was 99.0%, the higher of the two. See our Redondo Beach schools guide for its programs.

Choosing between the two high schools

Visit both. Compare course offerings, class sizes, the commute from your street and what your child wants to study. Dashboard results for a high school rest on grade 11 alone, so read them with the graduation rate and the school's own accountability report card.

Enrollment, permits and recognition in the Hermosa Beach district

Enrolling a new student in Hermosa Beach

New families register online through the district's enrollment page, and returning students complete back-to-school forms through the PowerSchool parent portal. The district puts its enrollment at about 1,400 to 1,500 students. Check the grade placement chart if your child is moving from another state.

Interdistrict permits into and out of Hermosa Beach

Families who live outside the district can apply for a limited number of interdistrict permits. For 2027-28 the window runs from February 2 to March 26, 2027, with a lottery on April 1, 2027 if there are more applicants than places. Children of district employees get first priority, and siblings of current students may get priority. Hermosa residents who want a school elsewhere apply to the district for a release.

Awards the Hermosa Beach district lists

The district lists California Distinguished School, Gold Ribbon, Golden Bell and Green Ribbon awards among its recognitions. Ask which school and year each award covers.

How to check which schools serve a Hermosa Beach address

  1. Call the Hermosa Beach City School District office at 1645 Valley Drive, (424) 333-9975, with the street address and ask them to confirm it is inside the district.
  2. Read each school's School Accountability Report Card, linked from the district site, for class sizes, teacher credentials and facilities.
  3. Look up each school on the California School Dashboard for results by student group.
  4. For high school, contact the registration office of Manhattan Beach Unified or Redondo Beach Unified to confirm the current process for Hermosa students.

Never rely on a listing's school line; it is not a guarantee, and boundaries and programs change. For prices and buying steps, see our Hermosa Beach homes guide, and for daily life see living in Hermosa Beach.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Hermosa Beach Schools,
answered.

What school district is Hermosa Beach in?+

Hermosa Beach is served by the Hermosa Beach City School District, which runs transitional kindergarten through grade 8 on three campuses: Hermosa View (TK to grade 1), Hermosa Vista (grades 2 to 4) and Hermosa Valley (grades 5 to 8). It also runs a preschool. For high school, students choose Manhattan Beach Unified's Mira Costa High or Redondo Beach Unified's Redondo Union High.

Are Hermosa Beach schools good?+

On the 2025 California School Dashboard, the district scored 64.4 points above the standard in English and 53.1 points above in math, both Blue, the top color. The state averages were 8.1 points below and 42.4 points below. Chronic absenteeism was 7.4%, against 17.1% statewide. Visit the schools and read their report cards to judge fit.

Does Hermosa Beach have a high school?+

No. Since the South Bay Union High School District was dissolved after a 1992 vote, Hermosa Beach has kept an elementary district only. State law lets its students attend high school in Manhattan Beach Unified or Redondo Beach Unified. The district says grade 8 students choose between Mira Costa High and Redondo Union High.

Which Hermosa Beach school has the highest test scores?+

Hermosa Vista, the grades 2 to 4 campus at 417 25th Street, had the highest 2025 results: 70.9 points above standard in ELA and 76.6 above in math, both up more than 20 points from 2024. Hermosa Valley, grades 5 to 8, scored 61.1 above in ELA and 41.5 above in math. Every student in a grade attends the same campus.

How do I find out which school a Hermosa Beach home is zoned for?+

Because the district runs one campus for each grade band, every enrolled student in a grade attends the same school. What you need to confirm is that the address lies inside the district. Call the district office at (424) 333-9975 with the street address, and do not rely on a listing's school field.

Can I attend Hermosa Beach schools if I live outside the city?+

Possibly, by interdistrict permit. The district accepts a limited number, reviewed case by case on space. For 2027-28, applications open February 2 and close March 26, 2027, with a lottery on April 1 if needed. You first need a release from your home district, and children of district employees get first priority.
