How to read the California School Dashboard for Long Beach schools

The California School Dashboard is the state's official report card. For English and math it shows how far a school's average score on the state tests (grades 3 to 8 and 11) sits above or below the "standard met" line, in points. A positive number means students on average scored above the standard. Each result also gets one of five colors, from Red (lowest) through Orange, Yellow and Green to Blue (highest), based on both the current level and the change from the year before.

All figures on this page come from the California Department of Education's 2025 Dashboard data files, for all students. They describe a school, not a child's experience in a particular classroom, and small schools can move a lot in one year. Chronic absenteeism is the share of students who missed 10% or more of school days; lower is better.

School choice in Long Beach: pathways, dual language and charters

LBUSD High School of Choice

Every LBUSD 8th grader ranks pathway programs at the district's high schools through the School of Choice application. For students entering 9th grade in fall 2027, the district says the application opens November 3, 2026 for current LBUSD 8th graders, and private and charter school students who live in the district must enroll between October 19 and December 4, 2026 first. Placement is by district criteria and space. The district does not provide transportation to a school of choice, except for eligible students with disabilities, but every K-12 student can ride Long Beach Transit buses free.

Dual language schools in LBUSD

The district lists dual language immersion programs at Bixby, Chavez, Henry, Lafayette, Riley, Webster and Willard elementary schools and at Keller Middle. Open enrollment for elementary and middle school choice for 2027-28 begins January 8, 2027, according to the district.

Charter schools in Long Beach

The CDE directory lists Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach (grades 6 to 8, 3601 Linden Avenue) as an active charter in LBUSD; it scored 34.3 above standard in English on the 2025 Dashboard. Charters admit by application or lottery, not by address. Students who live outside LBUSD need an interdistrict permit from their home district to attend.

How to check which schools serve a Long Beach address

School assignment follows the student's home address, and boundaries can change. Before you buy, use the district's Find my Schools by Address tool, linked from the LBUSD School Finder, then call the school to confirm. A listing that names a school does not guarantee a seat there. Compare results on the California School Dashboard, which also shows results by student group. For the wider housing picture see our Long Beach guide and the Long Beach neighborhoods guide.
