Sausalito school results on the 2025 California School Dashboard
Two public districts serve the City of Sausalito: the Sausalito Marin City School District for kindergarten through grade 8, and the Tamalpais Union High School District for grades 9 to 12. The table uses the state's 2025 Dashboard data files. For English and math, the figure is the average distance from the grade-level standard on state tests, in points: zero means students scored at the standard on average, and a negative number means below it.

Kindergarten to grade 8: Sausalito Marin City School District
The district's office is at 200 Phillips Drive in Marin City, and it runs one active school, according to the California Department of Education directory.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, 636 Nevada Street, Sausalito
MLK Academy is the district's K-8 school, listed by the state at 636 Nevada Street. Its 2025 Dashboard results were 1.2 points above standard in English, up 12.6 points on the prior year, and 14.0 points below standard in math, up 21.9 points. Those gains were among the larger year-over-year moves for any school serving Sausalito. The 2025 test counts were small, about 158 students in each subject, so one cohort can move the average noticeably.
Chronic absenteeism at MLK Academy
30.4% of MLK Academy students were chronically absent in the 2025 Dashboard year (83 of 273), up 5.2 points from the year before and well above the state rate of 17.1%. Chronic absence means missing 10% or more of school days. If you are comparing schools, ask the principal what the school is doing about attendance; it is the measure on this page that moved the wrong way.
Willow Creek Academy: closed charter, same campus
Willow Creek Academy Charter, a K-8 charter at the same 636 Nevada Street address, is listed by the state as closed on June 30, 2021. Older listings and reviews that mention it no longer describe a school you can enroll in. Some older listings also cite earlier MLK Academy addresses; the state directory lists those records as closed.
Enrolling in the Sausalito Marin City School District
The district handles enrollment online through its Aeries enrollment portal, with tours arranged through the district office. Its enrollment page lists the school calendar, immunization requirements and contact details. Ask for proof-of-residence requirements before you sign a lease or close on a home if the start date matters.
Grades 9 to 12: Tamalpais Union High School District
The Tamalpais Union High School District publishes a list of the cities in each comprehensive high school's area. Sausalito is listed under Tamalpais High, together with Mill Valley, Marin City, Bolinas, Stinson Beach and Muir Beach. New registrations go to the student's school of residence through the district's online Synergy system.
Tamalpais High, 700 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley
Tamalpais High is in neighboring Mill Valley. On the 2025 Dashboard it scored 55.0 points above standard in English (down 7.5 points on the prior year) and 2.3 points above standard in math (up 5.6). School choice for Sausalito students
Open enrollment within the Tamalpais Union district
Students who live in the district can apply to attend Tamalpais, Redwood or Archie Williams instead of their school of residence. The window for 2027-28 is January 1 to March 31, 2027, with no late applications. If a school has more applicants than open seats, the district holds a lottery and keeps a waiting list that does not carry over to the next year. Open enrollment does not apply to the alternative schools.
Interdistrict transfers
Students who live outside the Tamalpais Union district, including those who attend a middle school in one of its cities without living there, are directed to its interdistrict transfer policy and its office at (415) 945-1020. A transfer is a request, not a right, so do not buy a home on the assumption that one will be granted.
Private schools near Sausalito
The City of Sausalito's schools page points families to Marin Magazine's private school guide, which can be filtered by city, county and affiliation, and the state keeps its own private school directory. The city also lists two boat-building schools on the waterfront, the Arques School and the Spaulding Marine Center. Private school tuition and admission are separate from your home address.
How to check which school serves a Sausalito address
We never say a particular home is zoned for a school. Boundaries can change, and a 94965 mailing address may sit outside the city. Use the official tools before you make an offer.
Use the district boundary map
The Sausalito Marin City School District posts a boundary map prepared by the County of Marin's GIS team. It shows the district's edges against the Sausalito city limits, unincorporated areas and the neighboring Mill Valley and Reed districts, and it says plainly that the map is representational and not survey-accurate. Call the district to confirm a specific address.
Confirm the high school with the Tamalpais Union district
The Tamalpais Union cities list is the quickest high school check, but registration still requires residency verification. Ask the district office to confirm the school of residence for the exact address.
Look up results on the California School Dashboard
Search each school by name on caschooldashboard.org to see its colors, student group results and prior years. The Dashboard also links each school's School Accountability Report Card, which covers class sizes, teacher credentials and facilities.
