How to read California School Dashboard results

California does not give schools letter grades. The California School Dashboard, published by the California Department of Education (CDE), rates each school on several indicators with five colors. From lowest to highest they are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue, and each color combines this year's result with the change from last year.

  • English and math appear as "distance from standard": the average number of points students scored above (+) or below (-) the grade-level standard on state tests in grades 3 to 8 and 11.
  • Graduation rate is the four-year cohort rate for high schools.
  • Chronic absenteeism is the share of K-8 students who missed 10% or more of the school year. Lower is better.

Every figure on this page comes from the CDE's 2025 Dashboard data files (the fall 2025 release, covering 2024-25), downloaded in October 2026, for all students. The 2026 Dashboard normally comes out in December, so check the live site for newer results.

How to check which schools serve a Huntington Beach address

Because four elementary districts split the city, the street address decides the district, and the district decides the school. Two homes a few blocks apart can be in different districts. Never rely on a listing's school line; check it yourself.

  1. Find the elementary district. Huntington Beach City Elementary, Ocean View, Fountain Valley and Westminster each publish a locator or boundary map: Huntington Beach City School District (My School Locator), Ocean View School District (School Locator and boundary maps), Fountain Valley School District (School Locator) and Westminster School District (School Boundaries).
  2. Find the high school with the Huntington Beach Union High School District School Locator.
  3. Call the district office to confirm, since boundaries and capacity can change from year to year.
  4. Look up each school on the California School Dashboard for the latest results.
