Camarillo crime: the official numbers
The California DOJ's Crimes and Clearances file reports crimes by law enforcement agency. Camarillo appears as its own jurisdiction even though its police service is provided under contract by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Here are the ten most recent years:
| Year | Violent crimes | Property crimes |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 123 | 1,125 |
| 2017 | 107 | 1,086 |
| 2018 | 78 | 841 |
| 2019 | 58 | 817 |
| 2020 | 53 | 817 |
| 2021 | 38 | 853 |
| 2022 | 38 | 912 |
| 2023 | 57 | 892 |
| 2024 | 89 | 823 |
| 2025 | 99 | 769 |
Violent crime peaked at 123 in 2016, fell to 38 in 2021 and 2022, then climbed to 99 in 2025. Property crime has stayed between about 770 and 910 a year since 2018, well below the 1,100-plus levels of 2016 and 2017. Small counts move a lot from year to year: a change of 30 violent crimes is a large percentage swing in a city of 70,000.
Camarillo crime rate vs Ventura County, nearby cities and California
To compare places of different sizes, we divided the DOJ's 2025 counts by Census ACS 2020-2024 population estimates and multiplied by 100,000. The county figure adds up every agency in Ventura County in the DOJ file, including the Sheriff's unincorporated areas, the CHP, state parks and college police.
| Area (2025) | Violent crimes | Violent per 100,000 | Property crimes | Property per 100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Camarillo | 99 | 141.1 | 769 | 1,095.7 |
| Thousand Oaks | 157 | 125.4 | 1,218 | 972.8 |
| Moorpark | 35 | 97.6 | 222 | 619.2 |
| Simi Valley | 168 | 133.7 | 960 | 764.1 |
| Oxnard | 1,109 | 551.9 | 3,215 | 1,600.1 |
| Ventura County, all agencies | 2,427 | 289.8 | 9,745 | 1,163.6 |
| California | 170,397 | 433.7 | 705,925 | 1,796.8 |
Camarillo's violent crime rate sits close to Simi Valley's and above Thousand Oaks and Moorpark. Its property crime rate is higher than those three cities but below the county and state.
What the Camarillo crime numbers are made of
In 2025, Camarillo's 99 violent crimes were 1 homicide, 10 rapes, 13 robberies and 75 aggravated assaults. The rise since 2023 came mostly from aggravated assaults, which went from 39 to 61 in 2024 and 75 in 2025. Of the 769 property crimes, 659 were larceny-thefts such as shoplifting and thefts from cars, 67 were burglaries and 43 were vehicle thefts. The city's police page carries advice on preventing catalytic converter theft.
The same file records clearances, meaning cases closed by an arrest or by exceptional means. Camarillo cleared 76 violent crimes and 252 property crimes in 2025, or 76.8% and 32.8% of the year's counts. Statewide the figures were 45.9% and 11.2%. Clearances can relate to crimes from earlier years, so treat the percentages as a rough guide.
What the crime numbers do and do not tell you
The DOJ counts cover crimes reported to and recorded by the agency. Unreported crime is missing, and the counts do not say where in the city each crime happened. Our rates use the Census five-year population estimate, so they can differ slightly from rates that use state Department of Finance figures.
Some places with a Camarillo address are counted elsewhere. CSU Channel Islands has its own police department, which reported 3 violent and 13 property crimes in 2025. Unincorporated areas such as Somis and Santa Rosa Valley fall under the Ventura County Sheriff's countywide line, not Camarillo's. A citywide count also mixes shopping and business areas with residential streets, so it cannot tell you about one block.

Wildfire around Camarillo
The Mountain Fire, which started on November 6, 2024 near Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road in Somis, burned 19,904 acres and destroyed 243 structures, according to CAL FIRE. Homes near open land on the city's edges can face higher insurance costs. Flood zones in Camarillo
The city posts a FEMA flood plain map on its planning pages. Look up the exact address on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, because a home in a high-risk zone with a mortgage usually needs flood insurance.
