How to read the Dashboard results on this page

California has no A to F school grades. The state's California School Dashboard reports each school on several measures and gives most of them one of five colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green or Blue, from lowest to highest. The color blends this year's result with the change since last year, so a school can score below standard and still earn Green if it improved a lot.

  • English and math are reported as distance from standard: how many points the average tested student scored above (+) or below (-) the grade-level standard on state tests in grades 3 to 8 and 11. Zero means right at standard.
  • Graduation rate is the share of a four-year high school class that graduated.
  • Chronic absenteeism is the share of students who missed 10% or more of the school days they were enrolled.

All figures below are from the California Department of Education's 2025 Dashboard data files for all students. Small schools can swing sharply from year to year, so read the number of students tested on the Dashboard before drawing conclusions.

Sacramento school districts compared

At least six districts run schools with Sacramento mailing addresses. Sacramento City Unified has the most, Natomas Unified's schools sit in Natomas, and Twin Rivers Unified and Robla Elementary have schools in the north of the city, in ZIPs such as 95815 and 95838. Elk Grove Unified and San Juan Unified also run schools with Sacramento addresses. A Sacramento mailing address does not tell you the district, so check each home separately.

School choice in Sacramento: open enrollment, specialty programs and charters

SCUSD open enrollment for grades K-8

Students living in Sacramento City Unified can apply to other district K-8 schools when space allows. The district lists the 2027-28 open enrollment window as January 11 to February 5, 2027, through its SchoolMint system.

SCUSD High School Specialty Programs

Honors programs (McClatchy's HISP, Kennedy's AP Capstone, Rosemont's LEAD and West Campus) and career academies are filled through a single High School Specialty Program application. The district's 2027-28 table shows which grades have openings; many programs, including most of McClatchy's, accept new students mainly in 9th grade.

Transfers between and into Sacramento districts

SCUSD's district permit window for 2027-28 runs April 5 to April 30, 2027. Transfers into SCUSD from another district need an approved inter-district permit from the home district first. Dual immersion programs accept intra-district permits during the year.

Charter schools in the city

Charters enroll by application, not address. Examples with 2025 Dashboard results include Natomas Charter, Sacramento Charter High (0.2 above standard in English, 88.0% graduation), The MET (88.6% graduation) and Sacramento New Technology Early College High (93.9% graduation). Check each school's admission dates directly.

How to check which schools serve a Sacramento address

We never say a home is zoned for a school. Attendance areas follow district boundaries, not ZIP codes or neighborhood names, and they can change. A house with a Sacramento mailing address can sit in any of several districts. Before you buy:

  1. Sacramento City Unified: enter the address in the district's School Finder from its Find Your School page, or call the Enrollment Center at (916) 643-2400. It is at 5601 47th Avenue and open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  2. Natomas Unified: use the school locator linked from Enrollment in NUSD Schools.
  3. Twin Rivers Unified: use Find Your School on trusd.net.
  4. Elk Grove Unified: check Boundary Information on egusd.net.
  5. Robla Elementary: contact the district through robla.k12.ca.us.

Then look the school up on the Dashboard for its latest results. For prices in the areas around the schools above, see our Sacramento real estate guide, the East Sacramento and Land Park guides, and the Sacramento ZIP code guide.
